Embedded Chart Does Not Print in Color on DeskJet 500C or 550C

ID: Q97130

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows versions 3.0, 3.0a, 3.1, 3.11
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 3.0, 4.0
  • Microsoft Graph 3.0
  • Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, version 3.0

SYMPTOMS

When you create a color chart in Microsoft Graph or Microsoft Excel and embed it in a Word for Windows document, every other chart in your document may print in black and white to a Hewlett-Packard (HP) DeskJet 500C or 550C printer if you use the HP DeskJet printer driver version 3.0 (DESKJETC.DRV). When this problem occurs, the entire chart prints in black and white, regardless of pattern formatting in the chart (dithered versus solid color patterns).

CAUSE

HP has confirmed this to be a problem with the DESKJETC.DRV printer driver version 3.0.

WORKAROUND

To correctly print all charts in color, add the line "pagescan=no" to the [Statdll] section in the WIN.INI file. To do this, use the following steps:

  1. Use a text editor to open the WIN.INI file.

  2. Search for the section [Statdll]. If you do not find it, add the heading [Statdll] to the file.

  3. Add the line pagescan=no to this section. The complete WIN.INI entry reads as follows:
    [Statdll]
    pagescan=no

  4. Save the WIN.INI file.

  5. Quit and restart Windows.
