Underline Extends Beyond TrueType Text on HP LaserJet 4

ID: Q97705

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows versions 3.1, 3.11
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 1.0, 1.1, 1.1a, 2.0, 2.0a, 2.0a-CD, 2.0b, 2.0c
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 3.0, 4.0
  • Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, version 3.0

SYMPTOMS

When you print underlined text formatted for a TrueType font to the Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet 4 printer, the underline may extend beyond the underlined text.

CAUSE

This happens if all the following conditions exist:

  • The printer resolution setting is 600 dots per inch (dpi).

  • The Print TrueType As Graphics check box is not selected. (This means you are downloading the TrueType fonts to the printer.)

  • You are using version 31.1.03 of the HP LaserJet 4/4M printer driver (HPPCL5E.DRV). This version of the driver does not support the 600 dpi resolution setting and produces inaccurate TrueType font sizes.

Downloaded TrueType fonts print too small with the 600 dpi setting; therefore, the underline character extends past the end of the text.

RESOLUTION

This problem was corrected in version 31.1.08 of HPPCL5E.DRV.

The updated HP LaserJet 4/4M printer driver is available from Hewlett- Packard.

As a temporary workaround, select the Print TrueType As Graphics check box in the printer driver Options dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in HPPCL5E.DRV version 31.1.03. This problem does not occur in later versions of the driver.

MORE INFORMATION

The HPPCL5E.DRV printer driver is manufactured by Hewlett-Packard, a vendor independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this product's performance or reliability.
