UNIDRV.DLL GPF with a Multiple Page Text Box in Excel

ID: Q98552

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows versions 3.1, 3.11
  • Microsoft Windows for Workgroups version 3.1
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 3.0, 4.0, 4.0a

SYMPTOMS

If you create a text box in Microsoft Excel that is wider than one page, when you choose Print or Print Preview from the File menu, you may receive a general protection (GP) fault in UNIDRV.DLL. This problem occurs when you are using the HPPCL.DRV or HPPCL5MS.DRV printer driver for the Hewlett-Packard (HP) Series II and III printers.

WORKAROUND

This problem does not occur if your text box is formatted with a TrueType font and you enable the Print TrueType As Graphics option in the Printer Setup dialog box.

To switch to a TrueType font, do the following:

  1. Select all the text in your text box. From the Format menu, choose Font.

  2. From the Font list box, select a TrueType font (such as Arial), and choose OK.

To enable the Print TrueType As Graphics option in Microsoft Excel version 3.0 or 4.0, do the following:
  1. From the File menu, choose Page Setup.

  2. Choose Printer Setup, choose Setup, and then choose Options.

  3. Select the Print TrueType As Graphics check box and then choose the OK button four times (only three times if you are using Excel 3.0).

To enable the Print TrueType As Graphics option in the Windows Program Manager, do the following:
  1. In Control Panel, choose the Printers icon.

  2. Select your printer from the list of installed printers and then choose Setup.

  3. Choose Options and then select Print TrueType As Graphics.

  4. Choose OK twice and then choose Close.

You can now print the spreadsheet using TrueType fonts.

MORE INFORMATION

The HPPCL.DRV printer driver is used for the (HP) LaserJet Series II printers. The HPPCL5MS.DRV is the printer driver used by Windows for Workgroups for the HP LaserJet III printer. If printing or a print preview is attempted while the HPPCL.DRV (HP LaserJet II) or HPPCL5MS.DRV (HP LaserJet III) is installed as the default printer driver, a GP fault may result if your sheet contains a text box that is wider than a single page width.
