Error Loading Nwredir.vxd with Real-Mode Drivers Installed

ID: Q129389

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 95
  • Microsoft Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

When you start Windows, you may receive the following error message:

Cannot load a device file that is specified in the SYSTEM.INI. The performance of Windows should not be affected without this file NWREDIR.VXD.

Press a key to continue.

Pressing a key yields the following error message:
Invalid VxD dynamic link call from NWREDIR(04) + 000000B9 to device "0487," service 6. Your Windows configuration is invalid.

The Nwredir.vxd file is in the correct directory and is not damaged.

CAUSE

A real-mode NetWare redirector (NETX or VLM) is being loaded and you are loading the Microsoft Client for NetWare networks (NWREDIR) for the same network card.

This problem can also occur if the real-mode protocol driver Ipxodi.com (or any other ODI driver) is being bound to the network adapter before Nwredir is loaded, even if either NETX or VLM is being used.

RESOLUTION

Use either of the following methods to resolve this problem:

  • Remove the real-mode NetWare driver from the Autoexec.bat file by removing any line that contains Startnet.bat, Netx.exe, or Vlm.exe.

  • Remove the Microsoft client for NetWare networks and add the correct driver for the NetWare shell you are using. To do so, follow these steps:

    1. In Control Panel, double-click the Network icon.

    2. Click "Microsoft Client for NetWare Networks" and then click the Remove button.

    3. Click the Add button, click Client, and then click Add.

    4. In the Manufacturers box, click Novell. In the Network Clients box, click the appropriate client for the NetWare shell you are using. If you do not know which NetWare shell you are using, please contact your network administrator.

    5. Click the OK button, and then click OK again.

    6. Insert the appropriate Windows 95 disk as required.

    7. Insert the appropriate Novell workstation disk as required.
