Sony CD-ROM Drive Not Detected During Setup
ID: Q134532

The information in this article applies to:
-
Microsoft Windows 95
-
Microsoft Windows 98
SYMPTOMS
During Setup, the Sony CD-ROM drive in your computer may not be detected.
CAUSE
This problem can occur if the Sony CD-ROM drive is attached to a Media
Vision sound card. Setup searches for Sony CD-ROM drives at several base
I/O addresses, but a Sony CD-ROM drive attached to a Media Vision sound
card is not in the range of addresses that Setup checks. Setup retains the
existing real-mode drivers for the CD-ROM drive, but the Windows CD-ROM
drivers may provide better performance.
RESOLUTION
You can set up the Sony CD-ROM drive in Windows manually. To do so, you
need to know the CD-ROM drive's settings. To set up the Sony CD-ROM drive,
follow these steps:
- Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control
Panel.
- Double-click the Add New Hardware icon, and then click the Next
button.
- Click the No option button, and then click Next.
- Click CD-ROM controllers, and then click Next.
- In the Manufacturers box, click Sony. In the Models box, click Sony
Proprietary CD-ROM Controller, and then click Next.
- Click Next, and then click Finish.
- When you are prompted to restart your computer, click No.
- Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control
Panel.
- Double-click the System icon.
- On the Device Manager tab, double-click the CD-ROM Controllers
branch, and then double-click Sony Proprietary CD-ROM Controller.
- Click the Resources tab.
- In the Settings Based On box, click Basic Configuration 0.
- Click the Use Automatic Settings check box to clear it.
- Use the Change Settings button to modify the resources to match
the CD-ROM drive's settings.
NOTE: Your Media Vision card may be permanently set to use IRQ 5. If
this is the case and you do not select IRQ 5, Windows or the CD-ROM
drive may not work correctly.
- Click OK.
- When you are prompted to restart your computer, do so.
To verify that the CD-ROM drive is set up correctly, check it in Device
Manager to see that no problems are reported in the Device Status box.
Also, make sure that you can read a CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.
