Cannot Connect to LPT4 with Client for NetWare Networks

ID: Q137726

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 95
  • Microsoft Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

When you are using the Microsoft Client for NetWare Networks, you may receive the following error message when you try to capture the LPT4 port in the properties for your printer:

The following error occurred while trying to connect LPT4: to \\<server>\<printer>

Device name is out of range allowed.

CAUSE

The Microsoft Client for NetWare Networks is limited to three NetWare printer redirections. This same limitation exists with the Novell NETX client, but does not exist with the Novell VLM client.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:

  • Connect to the NetWare printer by specifying a Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path to the printer, rather than capturing the LPT4 port.

NOTE: This workaround prevents MS-DOS-based programs from printing to the network printer. MS-DOS-based programs require that you capture a printer port.

  • Use the Novell VLM client instead of the Microsoft Client for NetWare Networks.
