Err Msg: The Mouse Driver for MS-DOS Cannot Be Loaded from...

ID: Q141442

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 95
  • Microsoft Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

When you start Windows, the following error message may be displayed in a full-screen MS-DOS window:

The mouse driver for MS-DOS cannot be loaded from an MS-DOS session within Windows. Exit Windows to load the mouse driver for MS-DOS.

After a few seconds, the window closes and Windows continues to load.

CAUSE

This error message can occur if Mouse.com or Mouse.exe is being loaded in the Winstart.bat file instead of the Autoexec.bat file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use a text editor (such as Notepad) to remove the line that loads the mouse driver from the Winstart.bat file in the Windows folder, and then restart the computer.

MORE INFORMATION

The Winstart.bat file is used to load terminate-and-stay-resident (TSR) programs that are required for Windows-based programs and are not needed in MS-DOS sessions. The Winstart.bat file should not be used to set environment variables.
