Folder Other Than StartUp Launches Programs

ID: Q141900

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 95
  • Microsoft Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

When you start Windows, you may experience either of the following behaviors:

  • A folder other than the StartUp folder launches programs.

  • Programs in the StartUp folder are not launched.

CAUSE

These behaviors can occur if the StartUp folder has been renamed.

RESOLUTION

Rename the folder to StartUp and add or remove programs as necessary.

MORE INFORMATION

The StartUp folder is a system folder that cannot be deleted. However, it can be renamed. If you rename the StartUp folder, it retains the properties of the StartUp folder and launches the programs it contains at startup. Another folder can be named StartUp, but will not launch programs.

To determine if a folder is the renamed StartUp folder, try to delete the folder after removing all the programs it contains. If it is the StartUp folder, you receive the following message:

<Folder> is a Windows system folder and is required for Windows to run properly. It can not be deleted.

You should rename the folder "StartUp."
