Opening a Folder Takes a Long Time

SYMPTOMS

When you open a folder in Microsoft Explorer on a drive using the FAT32 file system, one or both of the following symptoms may occur:

  • It may seem to take an unusually long time before the window is accessible.


  • The Working in Background pointer may appear for a long time.



CAUSE

The total space used by all directory entries in the folder exceeds 32K.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, move some files to a different folder.

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.


MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft Explorer parses the directory entries in the FAT completely before displaying the files.
