ID: Q156329

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 95
  • Microsoft Windows OEM Service Release version 2
  • Microsoft Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

After you install the FAT32 file system on a hard disk connected to an Adaptec 2940 or 3940 SCSI controller with a ROM BIOS version prior to 1.23, the computer may stop responding (hang) when you start Windows.

CAUSE

The SCSI ROM BIOS does not fully implement interrupt 13 extensions, which causes Io.sys to hang when booting.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use one of the following options:

  • Upgrade the SCSI ROM BIOS to version 1.23 or later. Contact Adaptec for more information about upgrading the ROM BIOS.

  • Repartition and format the drive without enabling large disk support.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem occurs only if the FAT32 file system is installed on the boot drive.
