Windows 98 Installed But Do Not Have a Windows 98 Startup Disk

A Windows 98 Startup disk is required to perform the steps in the "IDE CD-ROM Drive" and "SCSI CD-ROM Drive" sections of this article. If you do not have one, you can obtain one from any Windows 98-based computer to which you have access. To create a Windows 98 Startup disk, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double- click Add/Remove Programs.

  2. Click the Startup Disk tab, click Create Disk, and then follow the instructions on the screen.

After you create a Startup disk, continue to the appropriate method listed below.

IDE CD-ROM Drive

If your computer has an IDE CD-ROM drive, use the following steps.

NOTE: To determine what type of CD-ROM drive you have, consult the documentation included with your computer or CD-ROM drive.
  1. Insert the Windows 98 Startup disk in the floppy disk drive, and then restart your computer.

  2. Choose Load IDE CDROM Driver from the Startup menu, and then press ENTER.

  3. At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each command:

    c:
    cd \windows\system

    extract /a <drv>:\win98\win98_29.cab comctl32.dll /l c:\windows\system

where <drv> is one letter after the drive letter normally assigned to your CD-ROM drive. For example, if the drive letter normally assigned to your CD-ROM drive is D, type E in the command listed above.

  5. Remove the Windows 98 Startup disk from the floppy disk drive, and then restart your computer.

SCSI CD-ROM Drive

If your computer has a Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) CD-ROM drive and an Adaptec, Mylex, or BusLogic SCSI adapter, use the following steps.

NOTE: To determine what type of CD-ROM drive and SCSI adapter you have, consult the documentation included with your computer, SCSI adapter, or CD-ROM drive.
  1. Insert the Windows 98 Startup disk in the floppy disk drive, and then restart your computer.

  2. Choose "Load SCSI CDROM Driver (Adaptec)" or "Load SCSI CDROM Driver (Mylex\BusLogic)" from the Startup menu, and then press ENTER.

    extract /a <drv>:\win98\win98_29.cab comctl32.dll /l c:\windows\system

where <drv> is one letter after the drive letter normally assigned to your CD-ROM drive. For example, if the drive letter normally assigned to your CD-ROM drive is D, you should type E in the command listed above.

  5. Remove the Windows 98 Startup disk from the floppy disk drive, and then restart your computer.

Start Your Computer from the Windows 98 CD-ROM

Some computers can start from a bootable CD-ROM. To determine if your computer supports this functionality, consult the documentation included with your computer. If your computer supports this functionality, configure your computer to use the CD-ROM drive as the bootable device, and then use the following steps.

NOTE: For information about how to configure your computer to use the CD-ROM drive as the bootable device, consult the documentation included with your computer.
  1. Insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive, restart your computer, and then choose Boot From CD-ROM when you are prompted.

  2. Choose "Command Prompt with CD-ROM Support (IDE)" or "Command Prompt with CD-ROM Support (SCSI)" when you are prompted.

  3. At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each command

    c:
    cd \windows\system
    ren comctl32.dll comctl32.xxx
    <drv>:
    cd \win98
    extract /a <drv>:\win98\win98_29.cab comctl32.dll /l c:\windows\system

where <drive> is the drive letter assigned to your CD-ROM drive.
