Err Msg: Access to the Specified Device, Path, or File Is Denied

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to open a file on a computer running Windows NT Workstation from a computer running Windows 95 or Windows 98, you may receive the following error message:

Access to the specified Device, Path, or File is denied


CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you do not have Read permission for the file that you are attempting to open.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, have your network administrator grant you Read permission for the files you want to open.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 95 and Microsoft Windows 98..


MORE INFORMATION

This issue can occur even if you have Execute permission for the file that you are attempting to open. If you do not have Read permission for the file, you may be able to see the file, but you are not able to open it.
