Error Message After Installing Grolier Encyclopedia Version 7.01

ID: Q186126

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

After you install the 1995 Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia version 7.01, your computer restarts, and you may then receive one or more of the following general protection (GP) fault error messages:

IS20DEL caused a segment not present fault in module USER.EXE at 0004:00002ca4
-or-
MMTASK caused a general protection fault in module MMSYSTEM.DLL at 0004:00001837
-or-
MMTASK caused a segment not present fault in module KRNL386.EXE at 0002:00000d82

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because the Msacm.dll file is loaded into memory by Windows 98 when it starts. The Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedia Setup program overwrites and then restores this file while it is resident in memory, and this causes the copy of the file that is resident in memory to become unstable.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the Microsoft System File Checker tool to restore the following original Windows 98 files:

  • Msacm.drv

  • Msacm.dll
