Cannot Clear the "Animate Windows, Menus And Lists" Check Box

SYMPTOMS

When you click the Animate Windows, Menus And Lists check box to clear it on the Effects tab in the Display Properties dialog box, the check box may be selected again when you restart the computer.


CAUSE

This behavior can occur if user profiles are enabled on the computer, and the Animate Windows, Menus And Lists check box is selected for the default user.


RESOLUTION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it.

To work around this behavior, use either of the following methods:

Method 1

Disable user profiles. For information about how to do so, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Method 2

Disable the animation of windows, menus, and lists for the default user. To do so, follow these steps:

NOTE: The following steps may change this setting for all users of the computer.
  1. Use Registry Editor to make a note of the data value of the UserPreferencemask binary value in the following registry key:


    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\desktop


    For example, the data value may be the following value:
    a0 00 00 00


  2. Change the UserPreferencemask binary value to the data value you noted in step 1 in the following registry key:


    HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\desktop


  3. Quit Registry Editor and restart your computer.
