The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

While you are uncompressing a drive compressed with DriveSpace, you may receive the following error message

Cannot Uncompress

The following files and subdirectories exist in both the root directory of drive <drive 1> and the root directory of drive <drive 2>:

<file 1> <file 2> <file 3>

Windows cannot uncompress drive <drive 1> because files or subdirectories with the same names exist on drive <drive 2>. Rename all conflicting files and subdirectories on drive <drive 1>, and then try again.

where <drive 1> is the drive letter of your compressed drive, and drive 2> is drive letter of your uncompressed drive.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if there are duplicate files on both the compressed drive and the uncompressed drive.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, rename any duplicate files in the root folder of either drive, and then attempt to uncompress the compressed drive again.

MORE INFORMATION

During the uncompression process, information from both the host drive and the compressed drive are restored to a single drive. To prevent data loss or damage, DriveSpace does not overwrite duplicate files.
