Problem with CardBus Controller After Upgrading to Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

When you upgrade a computer with a CardBus controller from Microsoft Windows 95 to Windows 98, the CardBus controller may lose functionality. When this occurs, you see the following status for the controller in Device Manager:

The device has been disabled in the hardware. In order to use this device, you must re-enable the hardware. See your hardware documentation for details. (Code 29.)


CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the PC Card controller is set to "PCIC" instead of "CardBus" in the computer's CMOS settings.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.


  2. Click the Device Manager tab.


  3. Click the CardBus controller, and then click Properties.


  4. Click Enable IRQ Steering, and then click OK.


NOTE: If enabling IRQ steering does not resolve the issue, contact the computer's manufacturer for information about a possible BIOS update.
