"Request Timed Out" Running Pingname.bat and Pingnum.bat

ID: Q188173

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Pingname.bat or Pingnum.bat batch file from the Windows\Help folder at a command prompt, you receive only "request timed out" responses.

CAUSE

These two files are used to test your Internet connection. They ping www.microsoft.com (by name) and ftp.microsoft.com (by IP address). However, you receive "request timed out" responses because no computer in the microsoft.com domain that is accessible by the public responds to ICMP requests.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, modify the Pingname.bat file and change "www.microsoft.com" and "ftp.microsoft.com" to another name that responds to the PING command. Modify the Pingnum.bat file and replace "198.105.232.1" and "198.105.232.6" with an IP address that responds to the PING command.
