Toshiba Tecra 750 Computer with CD-ROM Drive Hangs When Starting

SYMPTOMS

When you start Windows 98, your Toshiba Tecra 750 computer may stop responding (hang).


CAUSE

This behavior can occur if all of the following conditions exist:

  • Your computer contains an integrated drive electronics (IDE) CD-ROM drive.


  • The IDE controller to which the CD-ROM drive is connected is using the driver included with Windows 98.


  • You enable direct memory access (DMA) support for the CD-ROM drive.



RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:

  1. Turn off your computer.


  2. Remove the CD-ROM drive from your computer.


  3. Restart your computer.


  4. Install the Toshiba drivers for the IDE controller. If you do not have the drivers on a floppy disk, obtain them from Toshiba Technical Support or Toshiba's Web site.


  5. Shut down your computer.


  6. Put the CD-ROM drive back into your computer.


  7. Restart your computer.
