DFS Service Is Not Removed on Upgrade to Windows 98

ID: Q188196

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade a Windows 95-based computer on which the Distributed File System (DFS) client is installed to Windows 98, the DFS service may still be listed on the Configuration tab in Network properties. If you remove the DFS client in Network properties, you may experience the following symptoms:

  • You receive the following error message when you double-click Network in Control Panel:
Your network is not complete. Do you want to continue?

  • When you restart your computer, Windows detects new hardware and attempts to install software for it.

  • You lose network connectivity.

CAUSE

In Windows 95, you must install the DFS service separately to gain access to DFS shared. In Windows 98, this service is included in the Microsoft Client for Microsoft Networks. No separate service is required. However, Windows 98 Setup only updates the DFS components; it does not remove the separate DFS client.

RESOLUTION

If you have removed the DFS service, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double- click Network. If the error message listed above appears, click Yes.

  2. On the Configuration tab, click Client For Microsoft Networks, click Remove, click OK, and then restart the computer when you are prompted.

  3. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double- click Network.

  4. Click Add, click Client, and then click Add.

  5. In the Manufacturers box, click Microsoft.

  6. In the Network Clients box, click Client For Microsoft Networks, and then click OK.

  7. Click OK, and then restart your computer when prompted. When your computer restarts, you should have access to DFS shares even though no DFS service is listed in Network properties.

MORE INFORMATION

The DFS service is used to gain access to DFS shares on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 and later servers.
