Windows Update Wizard Only Works with Internet Explorer

SYMPTOMS

If you are using a third-party Internet browser as your default browser and you start the Windows Update wizard, one of the following symptoms occurs:

  • If Microsoft Internet Explorer is already configured, it loads the Microsoft Windows Update Web page.


  • If Internet Explorer is not configured, the Internet Connection wizard starts.



CAUSE

This behavior occurs because you can load the Microsoft Windows Update Web page using only the version of Internet Explorer included with Windows 98 and later versions.

This behavior is by design.

The Microsoft Windows Update Web page uses ActiveX controls that work only in Internet Explorer. To ensure that the Microsoft Windows Update Web page works properly, it is designed not to work with third-party Internet browsers.

NOTE: If a third-party Internet browser is set as your default browser, Internet Explorer is not changed to your default browser when you use it to load the Microsoft Windows Update Web page.

If you attempt to manually load the Microsoft Windows Update Web page http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com using a third-party browser, you receive the following message:

Thank you for your interest in Windows Update.

Because Windows Update is the online extension of Windows 98, the best way to access this site is by selecting the Windows Update icon from the Start menu. You can select Windows Update either directly from the Start menu or from the Settings menu.
