Invalid Page Fault in Thumbvw.dll or Kernel32.dll Viewing Folder

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to view the contents of a folder using Thumbnail view, you may receive one of the following error messages:

EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module THUMBVW.DLL at 015f:799eaee4
-or-
EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 015f:bff9d709


CAUSE

This problem can occur if the Thumbs.db file (which contains the thumbnails for a particular folder) is corrupt.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Delete the Thumbs.db file in the folder for which Thumbnail view is enabled.

    NOTE: You need to be able to view hidden files to see the Thumbs.db file. To view hidden files, click Folder Options on the View menu in Windows Explorer, click the View tab, click Show All Files, and then click OK.

  2. Re-create the Thumbs.db file by clicking the folder in Windows Explorer, and then clicking Thumbnails on the View menu.
