MS-DOS Window Opens During Startup After Upgrading to Windows 98

ID: Q188961

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade to Windows 98, an MS-DOS window may open every time you start Windows 98. When this occurs, the MS-DOS window contains the following error message:

Specified command search directory bad
This also occurs with Creative Lab's Sound Blaster software that comes with their sound cards. In my case SRX991216601151 the cusotmer was upgrading a system to a new motherboard with a built on SB 128 chipset replacing the older SB AWE 32. The driver's for the SB 128 installed but it didn't repl ce the older SB 32 software until the customer did it manually. Looks like the new driver makes calls to software with the same name as the older one and because it wasn't the right version are in the correct area we got the MS-DOS Window.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if Cheyenne ARCSolo 1.0 is installed and is attempting to run a program at startup.
