Display Adapters Branch Missing in Device Manager After Upgrade

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade Microsoft Windows 95 to Windows 98, the Display Adapters branch may be missing in Device Manager.


CAUSE

This behavior can occur if your video adapter uses the Nvidia Riva 128 chip set, and is unable to acquire an interrupt request line (IRQ) during the Plug and Play detection portion of Windows 98 Setup.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, use either of the following methods to assign an IRQ to your video adapter:

Method 1

In your computer's Basic Input/Output System (BIOS), enable the Assign IRQ To VGA option. Note that the BIOS of some computers does not have this option.

Method 2
