No Active Channels Displayed on the Channel Bar

SYMPTOMS

After you install Windows 98 or Internet Explorer, the Channel bar may not display any active channels.


CAUSE

In Windows 98, this behavior can occur if you copy the Win98 folder from the Windows 98 CD-ROM to your hard disk, and then install Windows 98 from the folder on your hard disk. If you do not copy the folders in the Win98 folder from the Windows 98 CD-ROM to your hard disk this behavior can occur. The Channel bar files are located in the Win98\Channels folder on the Windows 98 CD-ROM.


RESOLUTION

Windows 98


  1. Create a temporary folder on your hard disk.

    For information about how to create a folder, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type creating, click Folders, click Display, click Creating A Folder, and then click Display.


  2. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.


  3. Locate the Win98\Channels folder on the Windows 98 CD-ROM.


  4. Double-click the Chl99.cab cabinet file.


  5. On the Edit menu, click Select All.


  6. On the File menu, click Extract.


  7. In the Browse For Folder dialog box, click the folder you created in step 1, and then click OK.


  8. Repeat steps 3-7 to extract the Chlen_us.cab cabinet file.


  9. Locate the folder you created in step 1.


  10. Right-click the Chl99.inf file, and then click Install.


  11. Right-click the Chlen-us.inf file, and then click Install.


  12. Click Start, click Shut Down, click Restart, and then click OK.


  13. Delete the folder you created in step 1.

    For information about how to delete a folder, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type "deleting" (without quotation marks), click Files Or Folders, click Display, and then click Display.


Internet Explorer 4 for Windows 95

  1. Double-click My Computer, and then double-click drive C.


  2. On the File menu, point to New, and then click Folder.


  3. Type Chltemp and press ENTER. Then, double-click the Chltemp folder to open it.


  4. With the Internet Explorer 4 CD-ROM in the drive, click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders. In the Named box, type chlen_us.cab. In the Look In box, click the CD-ROM drive, and then click Find Now.


  5. Right-click the Chlen_us.cab file in the list of found files, and then click Copy.


  6. Press ALT+TAB to switch to the Chltemp window, and the click Paste on the Edit menu.


  7. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click MS-DOS Prompt. Type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each command:
    cd\chltemp
    extract chlen_us.cab *.*
    exit


  8. With the Internet Explorer 4 CD-ROM in the drive, click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders. In the Named box, type chlen_us.inf. In the Look In box, click drive C, and then click Find Now.

    For information about how to view all files in a folder, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type viewing, click All files in a folder, and then click Display.


  9. Right-click the Chlen-us.inf file, and then click Install.


  10. Restart your computer.


  11. Delete the folder you created in step 1.
