Error Message: Error Creating Eyedog.ocx Control

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start the Windows Report Tool utility (Winrep.exe), you may receive the following error message:

Error creating Eyedog.ocx control.

Also, when you run the Microsoft System Information tool (Msinfo32.exe) and try to view entries under the Hardware Resources branch or the Components branch, you may receive one of the following error messages:
  • Cannot Display Information

    The component which displays this information is not functioning properly, or is not present on this machine.


  • Cannot Display Information

    The component which displays this information is not functioning or is missing.



CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Eyedog.ocx file, an ActiveX control, is not working correctly. This can occur if there are problems with the following files that this control uses:

  • Riched32.dll


  • Riched.dll


  • Riched20.dll



RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install WordPad, or if it is already installed, uninstall it, and then reinstall it. To do so, use the appropriate method:

WordPad Is Installed

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.


  2. Click the Windows Setup tab, click Accessories (the word Accessories, not the check box), and then click Details.


  3. Click the WordPad check box to clear it, click OK, click OK, and then follow the instructions on the screen to finish uninstalling WordPad.


  4. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.


  5. Click the Windows Setup tab, click Accessories (the word Accessories, not the check box), and then click Details.


  6. Click the WordPad check box to select it, click OK, click OK, and then follow the instructions on the screen to finish installing WordPad.


WordPad Is Not Installed

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add/Remove Programs.


  2. Click the Windows Setup tab, click Accessories (the word Accessories, not the check box), and then click Details.


  3. Click the WordPad check box to select it, click OK, click OK, and then follow the instructions on the screen to finish installing WordPad.
