ID: Q189757

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

If you are using multiple monitors in Windows 98, one monitor may display your desktop wallpaper incorrectly on the Windows logon screen. After you log on to Windows 98, the desktop wallpaper is displayed correctly.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if all of the following conditions exist:

  • You are using a Matrox Millenium video adapter as your primary adapter, and it is set to a resolution of 1152 X 864 pixels and a color depth of 65,536 colors.

  • You are using an S3 Trio 64V+ (Diamond Stealth Video 2001) video adapter as your secondary adapter, and it is set to a resolution of 1024 X 768 pixels and a color depth of 256 colors.

  • You are using a pattern as your desktop wallpaper.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, use the same color depth for all video adapters. For information about how to change the color depth when you are using multiple monitors, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type multiple, and then double-click the "Multiple Display Support" topic.
