IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry.
Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it
if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the
"Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a
Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe.
SYMPTOMS
When you try to use Hewlett-Packard's (HP) Colorado Backup for Windows 95
program in Windows 98, Colorado Backup does not detect your tape drive.
This may happen even though your tape drive is listed in Device Manager.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if Microsoft Backup is currently installed or has
been installed in the past.
RESOLUTION
WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems
that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft
cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of
Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys
And Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and
Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics
in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you
edit it.
To use Colorado Backup instead of Microsoft Backup, uninstall Microsoft
Backup, and then reinstall Colorado Backup. To do so, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then click the Windows Setup tab.
- Click System Tools (click the word, not the check box), and then click
Details.
- Click the Backup check box to clear it, click OK, click OK, and then
click Yes to restart your computer.
- Delete the following files, if they exist:
File Name Location
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Pnpwprop.dll Windows\System
Pnpwrenu.dll Windows\System
Pnpwfdc.inf Windows\Inf
Pnpwide.inf Windows\Inf
Pnpwppt.inf Windows\Inf
Pnpwtape.inf Windows\Inf
Pnpwtape.cat Windows
For information about how to rename files, click Start, click Help,
click the Index tab, type rename, and then
double-click the "Renaming files" topic to display it.
- Use Registry Editor to delete the following registry keys, if
they exist:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\Tape
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\TapeController
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\TapeDetection
- Restart your computer.
- Check Device Manager to verify that the Windows 98 tape icons and
drivers no longer exist, and remove them if they are present.
For information about removing a device in Device Manager, click Start,
click Help, click the Index tab, type device manager,
and then double-click the "Removing hardware" topic.
NOTE: There are two different tape drive icons: a gray icon from
Microsoft, and a blue icon from Colorado Backup. After you uninstall
Microsoft Backup, the gray icon may remain in Device Manager, and you
may need to removed it manually.
- Reinstall Colorado Backup and test to determine if the issue is
resolved by verifying that your tape drive is detected. For more
information about how to do so, contact the program's manufacturer or
view the documentation included with your tape drive.
- If the tape drive is still not detected by the tape software, contact
the program's manufacturer or view the documentation included with your
tape drive.
