Unable to Install Windows 98 CD-ROM Interactive Demonstrations

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to run the interactive demonstrations on the Windows 98 CD-ROM, you may experience the following symptoms:

  • When you click Interactive CD Samplers on the Windows 98 CD-ROM screen, you may receive the following error message:
    MS-SMPLR caused an invalid page fault in module OLEPRO32.dll @ 015f:f308742


  • When you attempt to run Setup for the Dilbert's Desktop Games demonstration by double-clicking the Dilbert.exe file in the Cdsamples\Demos\Dib folder on the Windows 98 CD-ROM, you may receive the following error message:
    Could not create a destination file c:\windows\temp\~IS_CMPX.~~~
    Error number: 2
    When you click OK, you may receive the following error message:
    InstallShield Self-extracting EXE:
    Extract failed: return from extract=-8



CAUSE

This behavior can occur if your Windows\Temp folder is missing.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use either of the following methods:

Method 1

Re-create the Temp folder in the Windows folder.

For information about how to create a folder, click Start, click Help, click the Index tab, type creating, click Folders, click Display, click Creating A Folder, and then click Display.

Method 2

Shut down and restart your computer. The Windows\Temp folder is re-created when you restart your computer.
