SYMPTOMS
On a computer that conforms to the Advanced Configuration and Power
Interface (ACPI) specification, if you select the Standby action for the
power button on the Advanced tab of the Power Management tool in Control
Panel, and you press the power button, the computer may hibernate instead
of standing by.
CAUSEThis behavior can occur on ACPI-compliant computers if the Enable Hibernation Support option is enabled on the Hibernate tab in the Power Management tool in Control Panel. Under this configuration, Windows 98 causes the computer to hibernate instead of standing by when you press the power button. RESOLUTIONA supported fix that corrects this problem is now available from Microsoft, but
it has not been fully regression tested and should be applied only to systems

With this update installed, the computer will stand by as expected when Standby is selected as the action to be performed when the power button is pressed or the lid is closed, and when you click Start, click Shut Down, and then click Stand By. STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed
