WordPad Cannot Save a Unicode Text Document as a Text Document

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to use WordPad to save a Unicode text document as a text document or an MS-DOS-format text document, the document remains in Unicode format. Also, every other character in the document may be unintelligible.


RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, copy and paste the Unicode text document into a new WordPad document, and then save it as a text document. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Unicode text document in WordPad.


  2. On the Edit menu, click Select All, and then click Copy on the Edit menu.


  3. On the File menu, click Exit.


  4. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click WordPad.


  5. On the Edit menu, click Paste, and then click Save As on the File menu.


  6. In the Save As Type box, click Text Document or Text Document - MS-DOS Format.


  7. In the File Name box, type a new name for the file.


  8. Click Save, and then click Exit on the File menu.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 98.
