Using ToggleKeys Feature Causes Sounds to Be Played Quietly

SYMPTOMS

If you enable the Use ToggleKeys feature in the Accessibility Options tool in Control Panel, sounds may be played very quietly or too quietly to be heard.


RESOLUTION

To work around this issue:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click MS-DOS Prompt.


  2. Type cd\<windows> where <windows> is the name of the folder in which Windows 98 is installed.


  3. Type copy con winstart.bat, and then press ENTER.


  4. At the hyphen prompt, type echo, press SPACEBAR, press ALT+7 (press the 7 on the numeric keypad), and then press ENTER.


  5. Press CTRL+Z, and then press ENTER.


  6. Type exit, and then press ENTER.


  7. Restart the computer. The PC speaker should beep, and sounds should be played correctly with ToggleKeys.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows 98.
