Internet Connection Wizard Repeatedly Prompts You to Restart

ID: Q191981

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

If you attempt to create a new Internet account using the Internet Connection wizard on a Compaq Presario computer, you may be repeatedly prompted to restart your computer, and it may appear that you are stuck in a continuous loop.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if your computer includes a preinstalled network client. The network client included with some newer Compaq Presario computers does not provide password caching.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, install a network client that provides password caching, such as the Microsoft Family Logon network client. For information about how to install the Microsoft Family Logon network client, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

ARTICLE-ID: Q176057
TITLE : Description of the Microsoft Family Logon Client

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

The Internet Connection wizard requires password caching but does not require a network logon. If you want to use the Microsoft Client for Microsoft Networks or the Microsoft Client for Novell Networks and you are not connected to a local area network, change your primary network logon to Windows Logon.

Installing the Microsoft Family Logon network client also installs the Microsoft Client for Microsoft Networks. If you want to remove the Microsoft Client for Microsoft Networks, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel

  2. Double-click Network.

  3. In the list of installed network components, click Client For Microsoft Networks, and then click Remove

  4. Click OK, and then restart your computer when you are prompted to do so.
