Problems Opening or Saving a Policy File That Contains a Group

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to add a group to a policy file using System Policy Editor (Poledit.exe), you may experience either of the following symptoms:

  • When you attempt to save the policy file, you receive the following error message:
    Unable to save <filename>: error 1010 occurred


  • When you attempt to open the policy file containing the group you added, up to three groups appear with similar names. The groups are distinguished only by random symbols appended to each group name.



CAUSE

This issue can occur if the group name contains more than 39 characters.


RESOLUTION

To prevent this issue from occurring, use 39 characters or less when naming groups.


MORE INFORMATION

This problem occurs most often on Novell NetWare 4.x networks using NetWare Directory Services (NDS). When NDS is in use, NDS group names must be used instead of bindery-based group names.
