Err Msg: An Unknown Error Has Occurred During Installation

SYMPTOMS

When you try to download a component from the Windows Update page, you may receive one of the following error messages:

  • An unknown error has occurred during installation.
  • Explorer caused an Invalid Page Fault in module Kernel32.dll
  • IE5WZD caused an exception C0010000H in module Kernel32.dll
  • IE5WZD caused an exception C0010000H in module MSJAVA.DLL
  • Explorer caused an Invalid Page Fault in module Kernel32.dll
  • IE5WZD caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll
  • IE5WZD caused an invalid page fault in module MSJAVA.DLL
  • IE5WZD caused an exception c0010000H in module KERNEL32.DLL at memory address
If you click Back and then click Download Again, you may receive the following error message:
Explorer
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shutdown.
If you then click Details, you may receive the following error message:
Explorer caused an exception C0010000H in module MSJAVA.DLL at 015F:xxxxx.
When you try to install Microsoft Outlook 98, you may receive the following error message:
Outlwzd caused an exception C0010000H in module Kernel32.dll
Your computer may stop responding (hang) after you receive these error messages.


CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine (VM) is damaged.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the following steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.


  2. Double-click the Windows folder, and then double-click the Downloaded Program Files folder.


  3. Delete the following files by right-clicking them one at a time, and then clicking Remove.

    NOTE: If you do not intend to reinstall the Microsoft Java VM, do not delete the Win32 Classes file.
    DirectAnimation Java Classes
    Internet Explorer Classes for Java
    Microsoft XML Parser For Java
    Win32 Classes
    InstallEngineCtl Object
    WuRedirInfoB Class


  4. Double-click the System folder.


  5. Delete the following files by right-clicking them one at a time, and then clicking Delete:
    Asctrls.ocx
    Inseng.dll
    Wudetect.dll
    Wupdatto.dll
    Wuredirb.dll

    NOTE: The Wudetect.dll file is located in the Program Files\Internet Explorer folder.


  6. Restart your computer.


  7. Download the latest version of the Java VM from the following Microsoft Web site:
    http://www.microsoft.com/java/vm/dl_vm32.htm
