Installing Windows 98 from a Zip Drive Is Not Supported

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Windows 98 from a Zip drive connected to a parallel port, you may be prompted for the following files after Setup restarts your computer the first time:

  • Bios.vxd


  • Power.drv


  • Vpowerd.vxd


  • Wfm0200.acv


  • Pci.vxd


  • Pcimo.pci


  • Isapnp.vxd


You can skip installing all these files except the Wfm0200.acv file. For this file, you must click Cancel.

After bypassing all of these files, your Zip drive does not appear in My Computer or Windows Explorer.


CAUSE

Windows 98 cannot be installed from a Zip drive connected to a parallel port.


RESOLUTION

To cause your Zip drive to appear in My Computer and Windows Explorer, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  2. Double-click Add New Hardware, click Next, click Next (if any hardware is detected at this time, click No), click "No, I want to select the hardware from a list," and then click Next.


  3. In the Hardware Types box, click SCSI Controllers, and then click Next.


  4. Insert your Iomega Zip drive installation disk in the floppy disk drive, click Have Disk, and then click OK.


  5. Click Iomega Parallel Port Adapter, and then click OK.


  6. After the controller is installed, reinstall the Iomega Guest 95 software.


  7. Reinstall Windows 98 from the original Windows 98 CD-ROM to replace the missing files.



STATUS

This behavior is by design.
