Cannot Disable Task Scheduler

SYMPTOMS

When you click the Stop Using Task Scheduler command on the Advanced menu in Task Scheduler, the Task Scheduler icon may still appear on the taskbar after you restart your computer.


CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you install Microsoft Windows Critical Update Notification from the Microsoft Windows Update site.


RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, use the following steps.

NOTE: If you follow these steps, you no longer receive reminders about critical updates to Windows 98.

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.


  3. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Windows Critical Update Notification, and then click Add/Remove.


  4. Follow the instructions on your screen to remove Windows Critical Update Notification.


  5. Double-click the Task Scheduler icon on the taskbar.


  6. In the list of scheduled tasks, right-click Critical Windows Update, and then click Delete.


  7. On the Advanced menu, click Stop Using Task Scheduler.


  8. Quit Task Scheduler, and then restart your computer.



MORE INFORMATION

Because of the important nature of Windows Critical Update Notification, it supercedes all other Task Scheduler settings.
