Invalid Page Fault Error Message When Updating Device Driver

ID: Q196052

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to use the Update Device Driver Wizard to update a driver from the Microsoft Windows Update site, you may receive the following error message:

Rundll32 caused an invalid page fault in module Kernel32.dll

You can still access the Windows Update site using Internet Explorer or by clicking Windows Update on the Start menu.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you are using CompuServe 4.0.1 or you installed and then uninstalled CompuServe 4.0.1 without removing all of its components.

The Virtual Key program included with CompuServe 4.0.1 is incompatible with the Windows Update site when you attempt to update drivers using the Update Device Driver Wizard in Device Manager.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, contact CompuServe to obtain an updated version of Virtual Key.

To work around this behavior, remove Virtual Key using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel.
