No Modem Sounds When Using a Gateway Telepath 2000 Modem

The information in this article applies to:
SYMPTOMS
After you upgrade to Windows 98 from Microsoft Windows 95, you may not hear any sounds (such as dialing or handshaking) from your Gateway Telepath 2000 modem when you try to establish a modem connection.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, contact Gateway Technical Support to inquire about the availability of a fix for this issue.
To work around this issue, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
- In the Named box, type mdmusrsp.inf, and then click Find Now.
- Right-click the Mdmusrsp.inf file, click Rename, type mdmusrsp.xxx, and then press ENTER.
- Extract a new copy of the Mdmusrsp.inf file from your Windows 95 CD-ROM using the System File Checker tool.

- Quit the Find tool.
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
- On the Device Manager tab, double-click the Modems branch to expand it, and then double-click your modem.
- On the Driver tab, click Update Driver. When the Update Device Driver Wizard appears, click Next, click the Display a list of all drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want option, and then click Next.
- Click Show All Hardware.
- In the Manufacturers box, click U.S. Robotics, Inc. In the Models box, click Sportster 28,800 Internal, and then click Next. When the Update Driver Warning dialog box appears, click Yes and then click Next.
- Click Finish, and then click Yes to restart your computer.
