Clicking Cancel on IP Address Tab Does Not Reset Changes

SYMPTOMS

When you specify an invalid Internet Protocol (IP) address on the IP Address tab in the TCP/IP Properties dialog box, you receive the following error message:

The specified IP address is not valid. Please check that the value you typed is correct. If you believe the value is correct but you still receive this message, check with your network administrator.
If you click OK and then click Cancel, the invalid IP address may not be reset.


CAUSE

This problem can occur if you click Cancel on the IP Address tab and click OK in the Network dialog box.


RESOLUTION

To prevent this problem from occurring, use either of the following methods:

  • Specify a valid IP address on the IP Address tab.


  • Click Cancel instead of OK in the Network dialog box.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

The following table lists invalid IP addresses for a computer, where x.y.z is a range of numbers from 0 to 254.

If you use any of the addresses listed above as the IP address for a computer, no other computer can successfully communicate with it.
