Cannot Copy Reserved LANtastic Resource Names as Files

ID: Q201696

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 95
  • Microsoft Windows 98

SYMPTOMS

When you try to copy a file from a LANtastic for DOS server, you may receive an error message similar to the following error message:

Cannot copy @keybd - the network request is not supported

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because LANtastic servers reserve some names for internal resources. If you use a file name that is reserved for a LANtastic resource, such as @printer, the file cannot be copied over the network.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, use a file name that is not reserved as a LANtastic resource. For a list of reserved file names, consult the documentation included with your LANtastic software.

MORE INFORMATION

The following table lists some file names reserved by LANtastic servers. These files are located in the Lantasti.net directory on the LANtastic server. For a complete list of reserved file names, consult the documentation included with your LANtastic software.

   File name       Comment
   ---------------------------------------
   @mail
   @screen
   @screen.bin This file can be copied
   @printer This file can be copied
   @batch
   @keybd
   @keybd.bin

The LANtastic 7.0 for DOS manual discusses the following reserved resource names:
  • LANtastic mail resource "@mail" - page 21

  • Captured printers must be preceded by '@' - pages 33, 35

  • Spooled keyboard resource "@batch" - page 46

  • Drive resources don't need '@' (for example, "a-drive") - page 35

Although LANtastic for Windows 95 servers do not contain these files, they use these resource names internally.

You can successfully create one of the listed file names on a LANtastic server from a client computer by right-clicking an empty area in a shared folder on the server, pointing to New, clicking Text Document, and then typing the file name.

The use of reserved file names may prevent network backups from working properly.
