Windows Hangs When You Send a File to a Floppy Disk Drive

ID: Q201823

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 98
  • Microsoft Windows 95

SYMPTOMS

You may experince any of the following symptoms:

  • When you right-click a file, point to Send To, and then click a floppy disk drive, your computer may seem to stop responding (hang). When this occurs, pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE has no effect.

  • When you try to gain access to a floppy disk drive, Windows seems to hang.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you are running Norton AntiVirus with Norton Utilities 3.0, and you are using Norton Disk Health Sensor to scan multiple partitions.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, Symantec Technical Support recommends upgrading to Norton Utilities version 3.09 or later.

To work around this issue, try creating a Disk Health Sensor for each partition.

When the symptom occurs, pressing CTRL+ALT+DELETE a second time may result in a warning that the system is busy or has become unstable. When you press a key, the Close Program dialog box should appear. Sysdoc32 may be listed as not responding. Click Sysdoc32 and then click End Task to complete the original Send To command.

MORE INFORMATION

Symantec Technical Support recommends disabling the Scan Virus sensors from Norton Utilities if you are already using Norton AntiVirus.
