RIVA 128 Video Adapters Are Incompatible with Multiple Display Feature

ID: Q205933

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 98
  • Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you add a secondary video adapter to a computer that uses a RIVA 128 video adapter as the primary video adapter, the computer may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This behavior is caused by an incompatible driver that is used by the RIVA 128 video adapter. RIVA 128 video adapters are not supported for use with the multiple display feature.

RESOLUTION

If you want to use multiple monitors, Microsoft recommends that you use only video adapters that are known to work in a multiple-monitor environment. To work around this problem, remove the secondary video adapter.
