Computer Stops Responding After Windows 98 Upgrade

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade your Microsoft Windows 95-based computer to Windows 98, your computer may stop responding (hang) when you restart your computer.


CAUSE

This behavior can occur if your communication port 1 (COM1) has the same Interrupt Request (IRQ) as COM3.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, restart your computer in Safe Mode and remove COM3:

  1. Hold CTRL while your computer restarts, and then choose Safe Mode from the Windows 98 Start Up Menu.


  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  3. Double-click System, click Device Manager, double-click the Ports branch to expand it, click COM3, click Remove, and then click OK.
