Microsoft collected hardware identification data in the past, but it has been determined that Microsoft no longer needs this data to serve customers' product support needs. The Microsoft Windows 98 Registration Wizard may have inadvertently sent a specific hardware identifier to Microsoft during user registration, regardless of whether you chose to send your hardware diagnostic information. Note that this hardware identifier is not used to keep any type of record about Microsoft customers.
