Packard Bell Computer Restarts Continuously

ID: Q229126

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 98
  • Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition

SYMPTOMS

After you enable Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) support on a Packard Bell Multimedia 4350 computer, your computer may restart continuously.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you have a Yamaha DS-XG sound card installed in your computer and both the sound card and the ACPI support attempt to use interrupt request (IRQ) 9.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, modify the IRQ resource of your sound card. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. When your computer is starting, press and hold down the CTRL key until you see the Windows 98 Startup menu, and then choose Safe Mode.

  2. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  3. Double-click System, and then click the Device Manager tab.

  4. Double-click Sound, Video And Game Controllers to expand the branch, and then double-click Legacy Sound Controller.

  5. On the Resources tab, click to clear the Use Automatic Settings check box, click Interrupt Request in the Resource Type column, and then click Change Setting.

  6. In the Value box, click or type a number of an interrupt request that does not conflict with any other device in your computer, and then click OK until you return to Control Panel.

  7. Close Control Panel.
