Start Menu Displays Small Icons When You Try to Use Large Icons

SYMPTOMS

After you click to select the Use Large Icons check box in Display Properties, the Start Menu continues to display small icons.


CAUSE

This issue can occur if the Start Menu is taller than the height of the windows desktop.


RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, use any of the following methods.

Change the Taskbar Properties

To change the taskbar properties, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  2. Double-click Display.


  3. On the Effects tab, click to clear the Use Large Icons, and then click OK.


  4. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Taskbar & Start Menu.


  5. Click to select the Show small icons in Start menu check box, and then click Apply.


  6. Click to clear the Show small icons in Start menu check box, and then click OK.


NOTE: You may need to restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Customize the Start Menu

To customize the Start Menu, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Taskbar & Start Menu.


  2. On the Start Menu Programs tab, click Advanced.


  3. Under Start Menu, remove any program icons you do not want on the Start Menu or arrange the folders and icons so when they are displayed using large icons, they fit on the windows desktop.
