Missing E-Mail After Uninstalling Windows 98 Second Edition

SYMPTOMS

If you uninstall Windows 98 Second Edition, you may be missing e-mail messages you received in Microsoft Outlook Express while you were running Windows 98 Second Edition.


CAUSE

This issue occurs because the Outlook Express 5 message store does not migrate to the Outlook Express 4.x message store format.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, migrate the message store to the Outlook Express 4.x format. To do this, use the appropriate method.

In Windows 98

If you use Windows 98, follow these steps:
  1. Quit Outlook Express 4.x.


  2. Browse to the <drive>\Tools\Mtsutil\Oemig folder on the Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM, where <drive> is the letter of your CD-ROM drive.


  3. Right-click the Oemig.inf file, and then click Install.


  4. Restart your computer.


  5. Open Outlook Express 4.x, and then click Import on the File menu.


  6. Click Messages, and then follow the instructions on your screen to import the e-mail messages.


NOTE: You must have an e-mail account configured in Outlook Express 4.x for the migration to work correctly.

In Windows 95

If you use Windows 95, follow these steps:
  1. Browse to the <drive>\Tools\Mtsutil\Oemig folder on the Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM, where <drive> is the letter of your CD-ROM drive.


  2. Copy the Oemiglib.dll file to the <drive>\Program Files\Outlook Express folder, where <drive> is the drive letter of the hard disk on which you install your programs.


  3. For more information about copying files in Windows 95, click Start, click Help click the Index tab, type copying files, and then click Display.
  4. Copy the Directdb.dll file to the <drive>\Program Files\Common Files\System folder, where <drive> is the drive letter of the hard disk on which you install your programs.


  5. Click Start, point to Run, type the following line, and then click OK:


  6. regsvr32 \progra~1\outloo~1\oemiglib.dll
  7. Click Start, point to Run, type the following line, and then click OK:


  8. regsvr32 \progra~1\common~1\system\directdb.dll
  9. Restart your computer.


  10. Open Outlook Express 4.x, and then click Import on the File menu.


  11. Click Messages, and then follow the instructions on your screen to import the e-mail messages.
