Dns_off.inf and Dns_on.inf Files Are Not Used in Windows 98 SE

ID: Q230203

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition

SUMMARY

The Dns_off.inf and Dns_on.inf files as well as the Domain Name System (DNS) entry in the Ics.adm file are not used in the released version of Windows 98 Second Edition.

MORE INFORMATION

The Dns_off.inf, Dns_on.inf, and Ics.adm files are located in the <CD-ROM>\Tools\MTSUTILS\ICS folder, where <CD-ROM> is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive.

When you use the Dns_off.inf or Dns_on.inf file, or the DNS option in the Ics.adm file, you create the EnableDNS value in the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\services\ICSharing\Settings\General\
The released version of Windows 98 Second Edition does not use this registry key.

If you need to configure a non-default DNS server, you need to configure the client computer's TCP/IP settings. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network.

  2. Double-click the TCP/IP binding that is connected to the ICS host computer. For example, double-click TCP/IP->NE2000 compatiable adapter.

  3. On the DNS Configuration tab, click Enable DNS.

  4. In the Host Name box, type a DNS name for your network.

  5. Click Add, type the TCP/IP address of the DNS server you use, and then click Add.

  6. Click OK, click OK, and then restart your computer when you are prompted.
