SUMMARY

This article describes how to import the telephony location and calling card settings from Windows 95 into Windows 98.

MORE INFORMATION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

The Windows 98 telephony settings are stored in the registry. The Windows 95 telephony settings are stored in the Telephon.ini file. When you upgrade from Windows 95 to Windows 98, Tapiupr.exe copies the settings from the Telephon.ini file to the registry.

If you perform a "clean" installation of Windows 98 (instead of an upgrade), you can import Windows 95 telephony settings from a Telephon.ini file:

  1. Copy the Windows 95 Telephon.ini file to the Windows folder on your Windows 98-based computer, replacing the Windows 98 Telephon.ini file.

  2. Use Registry Editor to export the Cards and Locations keys under the following registry key:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Telephony

  3. Export the Locations key under the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Telephony

  4. Delete the Cards and Locations keys under the keys listed above.

  5. Run Tapiupr.exe in the Windows\System folder to import the information from the Telephon.ini file.

NOTE: This procedure cannot be used to import telephony dialing rules from the Telephon.ini file into the Windows 98 registry. For additional information about modifying telephony dialing rules in Windows 98, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
