Anti-virus Causes Computer to Stop Responding When You Shut Down

SYMPTOMS

When you try to shut down your Windows 98-based computer, you may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • The floppy disk drive light may turn on.


  • You may receive a "Windows Protection Error" error message.


  • Your computer may stop responding (hang) while displaying the "Windows is Shutting Down" message.



CAUSE

This issue can occur if you are running a McAfee or Norton anti-virus program that is configured to scan your floppy disk drive when you shut down your computer.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, contact the manufacturer of your anti-virus program to inquire about the availability of a fix for this issue.

To work around this issue, configure your anti-virus program to not scan floppy disk drives when you shut down your computer. For information about how to do so, view the documentation included with your anti-virus program, or contact the manufacturer of your anti-virus program.
